Catalogue Note

This and the following pastel are described as follows by Portalis in his Gazette des Beaux Arts article (loc. cit.): 'Ce sont de juvénile figures, que réapparaissent à la vente du cabinet Baudot en 1894, des portraits sûrement, que la Jeune fille en allégorie du printemps......et la Jeune femme en allégorie de l' automne... ' (see Literature).  Portalis also mentions that they are signed and dated, which helps distinguish them from the various other allegorical portraits representing the seasons which Hoin must have painted. The artist was the son of a distinguished doctor in Dijon.  He arrived in Paris around 1772 and studied with Greuze.  In 1788 he became the teacher of drawing at the Royal Military School and he also became court painter to the Count of Provence, the future King Louis XVIII.
