Catalogue Note

The Swiss artists Töpffer and Brun are thought to have collaborated on this drawing, dated circa 1792, after having met in Paris during the revolution. The horse is given to Brun, who made a large number of studies of horses similar to this (see Fournier-Sarlovèze, L.-A. Brun, peintre de Marie-Antoinette, Paris 1911).  The engraving on which the drawing is backed, l'intérieur de Temple, is by Louis-Pierre Baltard, with whom Töpffer worked in Paris, and a final state exists bearing his signature (see Piranèse et les Français, 1740-1790, exhibition catalogue, Rome, Dijon and Paris 1976, p. 44).  Lucien Boissonnas notes that many watercolors by Töpffer dating from shortly after his time in Paris are backed with an architectural engraving such as this (see L. Boissonnas, Wolfgang-Adam Töpffer, La Bibliothèque des Arts 1996, p.58).
