Catalogue Note

Metz was born in Bonn, but was a pupil of Bartolozzi in London, before becoming a Royal Academician.  A painter and engraver, he concentrated particularly on religious subjects, and in 1802 left for Rome, where he was to engrave Michelangelo's Last Judgement.
