Catalogue Note

A large painting of a lion in a very similar pose was bought from Oudry in 1752 by the Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, who made a large collection of works by Oudry (see Animaux d'Oudry, exhibition catalogue, Fontainebleau and Versailles, 2003-4, p. 141, fig. 3).  A drawing of a lion, in this medium and with these dimensions, was in the Paignon-Dijonval collection (see Literature below).
