Catalogue Note

This charming drawing is characteristic of Robert's compositions incorporating classical ruins. It shows the strong influence of Panini, whose works so impressed Robert when he arrived at the French Academy in Rome in 1754. According to the 1986 exhibition catalogue (loc. cit.), Victor Carlson informed Mr. & Mrs. Steiner in a 1983 telephone conversation that he believes this to be a relatively early drawing, dating from circa 1757-59.
