Catalogue Note

This is a study for the head of St. John the Baptist in Boucher's painting St. John the Baptist Praying, originally in the collection of Madame de Pompadour and now in the Minneapolis Institue of Arts (see Ananoff, op. cit., 1976, vol. II, p. 63, no. 361).  Another drawing related to the painting was in the Lempereur sale, 19 October 1775, lot 110. Ananoff dates the painting to 1750. Madame de Pompadour had a special interest in St. John the Baptist (her first name was Jeanne) and she commissioned Boucher to paint several scenes from his life.
