Catalogue Note

The drawings in the Beauchamp sale were all removed from an album which bore the bookplate of Horace Walpole and which also had an inscription inside the back cover, possibly in Francesco Guardi's hand (see also the previous lot).  The present drawing is one of several studies by Giandomenico on the theme of Angelica and Medoro - characters in Ariosto's epic poem Orlando Furioso - which were inspired by his father's frescoes painted in the Villa Valmarana, near Vicenza.
