Catalogue Note

This is a preparatory study for Batoni's painting which was one of a series of the Apostles commissioned by Count Cesare Merenda for his gallery at Forlì, painted in the early 1740s (fig. 1). The painting was in the collection of Anthony Clark and was sold, London, Christie's, 6 July 1978, lot 8 (see Clark, op. cit., p. 231, cat. no. 77).  Another study related to the painting is in the Royal Library, Windsor (see Clark, op. cit.., p. 388, cat. no. D288, reproduced plate 77).
