Catalogue Note
According to the Amsterdam catalogue, the attribution was originally proposed by Philip Pouncey, who compared this drawing with a sheet of male nude studies now in the Princeton University Art Gallery (see F. Gibbons, Catalogue of Italian Drawings..., Princeton 1977, vol. I, p. 62, cat. no. 169, reproduced vol. 2). The figure could be intended for a scene of martyrdom.
