Catalogue Note
This figure must be from a cartoon, possibly a tapestry design. Similar fragments connected with Giulio's Scipio Africanus series were sold London, Sotheby's, 14 April 1986, lot 283. The features of the boy are, however, closer to Raphael's work than to Giulio's fully developed style. According to the Rijksmuseum exhibition catalogue, Konrad Oberhuber suggested that the underdrawing of the present sheet could be by Raphael, worked up by Giulio.
