This is a particularly attractive and varied group of drawings, which includes views as far apart as Malta and Nice. Although other versions of some of the views have appeared in the salerooms, these are fresh and lively compositions and it is unusual to have such a complete series with its frontispiece. There are views of Florence, Bagni di Lucca, many of Naples and its environs, a double page spread of Paestum, several of Palermo, Segesta, Selinunte, Agrigento, Malta, Mount Etna, Messina, Stromboli, several spots in Southern Italy, the cloister of Montecassino, various views of Rome, Tivoli, Lugano, Lake Maggiore, several Swiss views including Martigny and St. Moritz, Genoa, and several of Nice. It would appear that the drawings were commissioned by William John Monson, 6th Baron Monson of Burton (1796 - 1862) and perhaps the album records a trip he made on the continent. Senape identifies himself as Roman, but lived in Naples and was clearly successful as a supplier of Italian views to travellers.
