Description

  • Mattia Bortoloni
  • pair of designs for paintings: the visitation, the flagellation
  • both pen and brown ink and wash, heightened with white, one over traces of red chalk

Catalogue Note

These drawings are perhaps designs for paintings in a church or private chapel, as their shaped tops indicate. The settings are strongly Venetian in character, as are some of the figure types; the latter are reminiscent of the early works of Bortoloni, the frescoes in the villa Cornaro at Piombino Dese (see Rodolfo Pallucchini, La Pittura nel Veneto, Il Settecento, Milan 1995, p. 150, figs. 224-226).
