Catalogue Note

The drawing has been attributed to Daniel Chodowiecki (Danzig 1726-1801 Berlin) on the basis of the inscription on the drawing, which would seem to be an inventory listing from a previous collection.  Although it is possible Chodowiecki could have made such a study as a student, a surviving male figure study by him, dated 1754, is certainly 18th century in style, whereas the present work is strongly reminiscent of the work of Dandini (see C. G. Boerner, Darstellungen ...von Dan. Chodowiecki, Düsseldorf 1991, Lagerliste 96, no. B). The watermark, an anchor in a circle surmounted by a star, also seems to indicate an earlier dating.
