Catalogue Note

The compositional approach and the bold and energetic brushwork seen in this impressive example of German Baroque drawing are very reminiscent of the works of Michael Willmann, to whom it was formerly attributed.  A recent exhibition in Salzburg and elsewhere, and the researches of Dr. Andrzej Koziel, have, however, brought into clearer focus the styles of Willmann and of the other artists working in his immediate surroundings, and it seems more likely that this drawing is in fact by Willmann's master pupil, Georg Wilhelm Neunhertz (see Michael Willmann und sein Kreis - Zeichnungen, exhibition catalogue, Salzburger Barockmuseum et al, 2001-2).
