Catalogue Note
The drawings of Waterloo and Simon de Vlieger can often be very hard to separate. Although the handling of the trees and buildings on the recto of the present sheet seems perhaps closer to what we expect of de Vlieger, the characteristic, bold use of chalk in the trees on the verso makes an attribution to Waterloo the only one that can plausibly be sustained.
