Catalogue Note
The John Boyd Thacher referred to on the mount may be one of two men of the same name, uncle and nephew, both of whom served as distinguised mayors of their native city of Albany, New York. The elder Thacher has a State Park named after him, and also formed an important collection of rare books, which was donated to the Library of Congress, following his death in 1909. The younger Thacher became mayor for the first time in 1926. See also lot 124.
