Catalogue Note
In a letter of 13 June 1990, Dr Bernhard Schnackenburg confirmed that he believes this drawing belongs to a large group of similar figure studies which were initially drawn in black chalk (or black lead) by Isack can Ostade, and later substantially reworked and washed by Dusart (see B. Schnackenburg, Adriaen van Ostade, Isack van Ostade. Zeichnungen und Aquarelle, 2 vols., Hamburg 1981, cat. nos. 581/U-630/U).
