Catalogue Note
Little that is known of this draughtsman: his designs are always in the same medium of pen and brown ink on vellum within framing lines, are usually elaborately signed in the lower margin, and often retain substantial margins (although not in this case). There are few examples in public collections (one is in the Rijksprentenkabinet and another in the Uffizi), but further drawings have been sold by Sotheby's in London (21 March 1977, lot 22), Amsterdam (16 November 1993, lot 90) and New York (23 January 2001, lot 134).
