Catalogue Note

In his article on the drawings of Ruisdael, Jeroen Giltay (loc. cit.) identified several problematic groups of drawings that were apparently by the same hands, but could not be attributed with any certainty. The present drawing he placed, together with ten others, in his "Problem Group 1"; of the other drawings in this group, one in the Louvre is particularly close in style to the Meissner drawing (reproduced Giltay, op. cit., p.176, fig. 46). In the past, these drawings have variously been attributed to Ruisdael, Hobbema and Jan Wijnants, amongst others, but they cannot realistically be associated with the securely attributable works of any of these artists, and until a better solution is proposed, they are probably best classified as "Circle of Ruisdael".
