Catalogue Note

Another version of this drawing, dated 1778 and with an inscription on the verso identifying the view, is in the Drents Museum, Assen (see B. Gerlagh and E. Koolhaas-Grosveld, Egbert van Drielst 1745-1818, Zwolle 1995, p. 80, fig. 76).  The village of Eext is in the province of Drenthe, not far from the artist's native Groningen.  Even following his move to Amsterdam in around 1768, van Drielst continued to depict very frequently the picturesque farms and woods of that region, earning him the nickname 'the Hobbema of Drenthe.'
