Catalogue Note
Brekelenkam's figure drawings are sometimes rather closer in style to Adriaen van Ostade than is the case here, but the substantial group of studies by the artist in Braunschweig also contains several works that are very comparable to this: particularly close is a study of an old lady sitting reading, with her feet on a similar foot-warmer (inv. Z 1199).
