Abraham Jansz. van Diepenbeeck 's-Hertogenbosch 1596 - 1675 Antwerp

The arrangement of the main foreground figures is similar to that seen in a Rubens painting of the same subject, executed circa 1616-17, formerly in the Berlin Gemäldegalerie, and destroyed by fire in 1945.  A grisaille copy of the Rubens, probably made as a modello for the engraving by Schelte a Bolswert (Hollstein 196), was sold, as Attributed to Diepenbeeck, New York, Sotheby's, 30 January 1998, lot 272.  The figures at the edges of the present composition are, however, different, as is the positioning of the fallen horse, suggesting this is a subsequent free reinterpretation by Diepenbeeck of the general idea of  Rubens' composition.
