Both inscribed with the names of the various vessel depicted, the first inscribed First Idea (lower left), No. 2 idea (upper center), and off Sandy Hook / Oct 1899 (lower right), inscribed possibly in another hand JPM(?), 23 Wall Street (on the reverse); the second inscribed 2 Idea / off Sandy Hook Oct. 1899 (lower left), No. 1 Idea (upper center);
pencil and wash on paper, heightened with white, mounted on board, unframed. 2 works.

Catalogue Note

These works are studies for the painting in the Collection of the New York Yacht Club (the painting is illustrated and discussed by Robert B. Mackay, Marine Paintings at the New York Yacht Club, Antiques, vol. CLVI, no. 1, July 1999, 92, 95, illust. pp 90-91, pl. II.) The Yacht Columbia, owned by Commodore J. P. Morgan, C. Oliver Iselin, and E. D. Morgan, defeated the Shamrock, owned by tea magnate Sir Thomas Lipton in the 1899 America's Cup off of Sandy Hook, New Jersey in October of 1899.
