A closely related work was sold at Lyon & Turnbull, Edinburgh, December 9, 2004, lot 61. The fishing village of Kirkcudbright, Scotland, on the estuary of the river Dee, became an important artist's colony starting in the 1880's, attracting many artists of the Glasgow school.
