Catalogue Note

This panel once stood at the very end of the left arm of a large Crucifix: the panel is still within its original engaged frame although this has been modified on the right side, where it was removed from the cross. The scratched scroll-like motifs marking out the Madonna's halo were probably once incised on silver-leaf (since worn off): this would also argue for the painting having been produced in Florence rather than Siena.
