Catalogue Note
Another version of this composition is in the National Gallery of Ireland, Dublin (see C. Vogelaar, Netherlandish fifteenth and sixteenth century paintings in the National Gallery of Ireland, Dublin 1987, pp. 26-28, cat. no. 845, reproduced fig. 25). The Dublin picture has in the past been attributed to Lambert Lombard, Simon de Mailly, and The Master of the Prodigal Son, although it is presently catalogued as 'Flemish School'. Further good quality versions of this composition are known for example the work which was sold London, Sotheby's,9 December 2004, lot 113, for £16,800.
The central building has been identified by G.J. Hoogewerff (cited by Vogelaer) as the Trofeo de Mario on the Esquiline Hill in Rome.
The subject matter is taken from the book of Genesis, chapter 24, verses 1-67.
