Catalogue Note

Fine chart extending from Cape May (New Jersey) to Cape Canaveral (Florida) from the second edition of Dudley's Dell'Arcano del Mare, the first printed sea-atlas of the world. Geographically, this chart combines John Smith's map of the Chesapeake, and White's map of the Carolinas, while the southern extension follows Jacques le Moyne's map of the Florida coast. This chart reflects the confusions of the period, caused by the difficulties of correlating the different names given to the same landmarks by English, French and Spanish explorers, so that often two names for the same feature are given, but in different locations.
