Catalogue Note
Rare. For the first edition of the Atlas novus Blaeu commissioned a new map of the West Indies (see lot 296); as the engraving was not complete when printing began, he was forced to an unusual remedy, resorting to creating this chart from from the north-western sheet of his second “West-Indische paskaart” (c.1630), Blaeu’s important wall-map of the North Atlantic. Its title “Insulae Americanae in oceano septentrionali, cum terris adjacentibus” (the two versions have the same title) is printed from letterpress, pasted on to a blank cartouche in the upper left-hand corner, while three sides were masked off in printing, only the left-hand side retaining the plate-mark.
