America--Four albums of newspaper cuttings relating to North America from the collection of Sir Thomas Phillipps.

Each volume bears a Middle Hill shelfmark. The contents are as follows:



XIII.a.8 - indistinctly lettered on spine ''American War of Independence 1768 to 1775... vol.1''. Contains a roughly chronological collection for these years.
XIII.a.9 - lettered on spine ''Collections relating to the American War 1758 to 1808 vol.2''. Chronological for 1758-64, then 1794-96 and 1801-09.
XIII.b.1 - lettered on spine ''N. America 1776 vol.1''. The first half of the volume is devoted to 1776-77 (though more so the latter), the second half 1779-83.
XIII.b.3 - [lacks spine]. Over half devoted to 1809-22, a quarter to 1777-78, the remainder various years (including earlier).

The contents of the volumes is summarized in a contemporary manuscript note in one of the volumes: ''Americana - A collection of papers, & scraps from newspapers both American and English relating to the United States and N. America from the year 1758 to the present period - containing (tho' not much in chronological order) the beginnings of the American War and historical accounts in its several stages - the bad treatment of the Indians by the English - and  a vast variety of anecdotes & biographical accounts...''
