Catalogue Note

The work is a facsimile of the celebrated series of paintings commissioned by General Makriyannis sometime during the 1830s from the painter Panayotis Zographos. The subjects vividly depict episodes from the Greek war of Independence, the last being a memorial list of philhellenes active in Greece during the war. The text describes the events shown in each of the plates, and also the acquisition of the originals in 1909 by Gennadius, Greek ambassador in London in the early 1920s.
