Catalogue Note
One of the earliest books on Aden under British occupation. Aden was captured and annexed to British India in 1839 after a ship under British colours was wrecked near Aden in 1837 and its crew and passengers grieviously maltreated by the local Arabs. Playfair played a prominent role in Aden, as assistant to Sir James Outram, the first British political resident and his successors, from 1854 to 1862, and during the British occupation of Perim in 1857.
