Catalogue Note

Difficult weather, the fall of winter and consequent darkness prevented a search party from setting out until 29th October 1912 to look for those who had made the final push to the South Pole. On 12th November, the party, led by Surgeon Atkinson, discovered the tent and the bodies of Scott, Wilson and Bowers within it. Lying next to Scott were his notebooks, the camera they had used on their final journey and two rolls of film, later developed by Debenham in the hut at Cape Evans. A cairn of ice was raised over the three bodies, surmounted by a cross made from a pair of skis. Another, smaller cairn was topped with a sledge, to serve as an additional marker. A search was made for Captain Oates's body, but it was never found.
