Catalogue Note

A fine set of 10 original drawings by Edouard Riou (1833-1900), used for plates 5, 7, 8, 11 and 14 in volume 1 and plates 17, 18, 19, 31 and 33 in volume 2 of Stanley's account of the Emin Pasha Relief Expedition, In Darkest Africa (1890). The detail in these original wash drawings is much finer than in the reproduced plates in the published work.
