Catalogue Note
A collection of 29 plates only from this work showing architectural features of Nero's famous Domus Aurea (the emperor Titus had later built some baths on the site, hence the work's title). The site had been known since the fifteenth century, but around 1774 the publisher Mirri started re-excavating in the area with the express intention of selling engravings taken from the features of the Domus Aurea that he uncovered.
The plates in this copy comprise the following: 1 (Preface), 3, 4, 10, 11, 13, 13 (different from the other no.13), 14, 18, 21, 22, 23, 25, 26, 28, 29, 30, 32, 36, 38, 42, 45, 47, 48, 49, 53, 60, 61 and one unnumbered. This is a variant issue, with two different plates numbered 13 (cf. Berlin Kat. 3950).
