Catalogue Note

A stunning depiction of a “Red-hot poker”, a plant of the Kniphofia genus, regarded as a species of Aloe in Ehret’s time. The Kniphofias are in the main South African species, although some are found further afield in Ethiopia, Madagascar, and Arabia. Ehret had painted Kniphofias previously, such as the painting of the Kniphofia uvaria (1737) illustrated as plate 54 in Calmann, Ehret, flower painter extraordinary, but this earlier version lacks the impact of the present one.
