Catalogue Note
An outstanding painting by Ehret of a magnificent hibiscus, “Deccan hemp” (named for the resemblance of its leaves to the hemp plant), with a large central flower and two seed pods on the stalk. Ehret had earlier depicted this plant in an engraved plate in his Plantae et papilliones rariores (1748), but the engraved image is far weaker than the present painting.
