Description
- Untitled English manuscript county atlas bound with a partial world atlas. [No place, c.1745?], 4to (230 x 175mm.), maps in ink and wash and/or watercolour, old marbled boards with original spine label, rebacked and recornered
Catalogue Note
The county atlas has 41 full-page maps, derived from Badeslade and Tom’s Chorographia Britanniae (probably the first edition of 1742, in which the individual maps had only a limited number of names within each county), each map with accompanying text on the facing page. The world atlas has 20 maps of Europe and western parts of Asia only, 19 of the maps with accompanying text. The model for the world atlas is not readily identifiable, one map (possibly not in a uniform hand) apparently entitled ‘The Present Seat of the War [17]93 (?) Comprehend.g Holland the Netherlands & Westphalia’. The spine is labelled ‘Atlas J:R’, possibly indicating the authorship of the manuscript.
