Catalogue Note

Designed by Samuel H. Pook and built in Rockland Maine by George Thomas in 1853, Red Jacket holds the record for a transatlantic crossing by a tea clipper which stands to this day.  She was named after a chief of the Native American Seneca tribe, Sagoyewatha (which means 'he that keeps them awake').  Sagoyewatha was given a red jacket by the British army which he wore almost continuously with immense pride.

Red Jacket's first master was captain Asa Eldridge who set sail from New York on January 11th 1854 and docked in Liverpool thirteen days, one hour and twenty-five minutes later.  In one day during the crossing through the  vicious winter storms she travelled an extraordinary 413 miles.
