Catalogue Note

Thomas Stephens was named after her owner, Thomas of Stephens & Sons, London and boasted a figurehead of Mr Stephens himself wearing a top hat.
She was an iron hulled vessel built in 1869 by William H. Potter & Co. of Liverpool.  In 1872 she sailed from Lizard to Hobson in sixty-nine days and managed to beat The Cutty Sark despite leaving eight days later.
