Condition
There is a surface crack running down the lower far left edge of the panel. There are some small chips to the paint surface to the left of the ship and a further three small chips to the paint of the boat. A discoloured varnish throughout. Ultraviolet light reveals no visible retouching. Held in a decorative plaster frame.

Catalogue Note
The H.M.S. Royal Sovereign depicted in this painting is likely to be the second vessel of this name. It was a First Rate of one hundred guns built at Woolwich Dockyard in 1701. It was rebuilt at Chatham in 1728 and was finally broken up in 1768.
