Catalogue Note
The Monastery at Melk is a Benedictine Abbey which was founded in 1089. The Baroque abbey in the present work was built by architect Jakob Prandtauer between 1702-1736 on the outcrop overlooking the Danube. The Abbey houses a particularly impressive library of early manuscripts and has the distinction of being the only Benedictine Monastery to have functioned continuously since its foundation.
