Catalogue Note

The Kish light vessel designated the end of a series of dangerous sandbanks running parallel to the Irish coast.  These sandbanks were responsible for the loss of many ships and the Kish light vessel was eventually replaced by a lighthouse in 1965.  The Kish served as a familiar mark on the course for the regattas organised by the many yacht clubs based at Dun Leary.

The first yacht club in Ireland was established at Cork in 1720.  There are records of regattas off Dublin Bay in the late 1820s, and in 1838 the Royal St George Yacht Club was founded at Kingstown, and the Royal Irish Yacht Club in 1846.  A steamer is visible in the background of the present composition.  Steamers were often commissioned to carry all the provisions for the yachtsmen and their families, as well as to provide a grandstand view of the day's sailing.
