Catalogue Note

Captain Allen was painted by Northcote in 1784 in London. He had a distinguished career reaching the rank of Admiral of the White Squadron in 1799.

John Carter Allen was commissioned as Lieutenant on 14th June 1745. He took command of the sloop Grampus in 1757, and after a gallant action when he took the Duc d’Aumont, a French privateer, was promoted to Post-Captain. In 1760 his ship the Repulse formed part of a small squadron under The Hon. Captain Byron (later Admiral Byron) during the siege of Louisbourg. He helped to take the island of Dominica in 1761, and served under Admiral Rodney in 1762 at the reduction of Martinique, and under Admiral Lord Howe and Vice Admiral Barrington at the relief of Gibraltar. In 1777 he displayed skill and gallantry during an action against the French whilst serving under Admiral Keppel. He died in 1800.
