In 1760 his ship the Repulse formed part of a small squadron under The Hon. Captain Byron (later Admiral Byron) during the siege of Louisbourg. He helped to take the island of Dominica in 1761, and served under Admiral Rodney in 1762 at the reduction of Martinique, and under Admiral Lord Howe and Vice Admiral Barrington at the relief of Gibraltar.
