Catalogue Note
H.M.S. Enchantress was built for Thomas Lister, 1st Baron Ribblesdale at Ringmore in 1802. She was bought by the Admiralty on 26th December 1804 for £2814.
Thomas Lister, well known from his celebrated portrait by Reynolds when Master Lister (Bradford City Art Gallery) was the son of Thomas Lister and his wife Beatrix Hulton. He was educated at Eton and Westminster and at Brasenose College, Oxford. From 1773 until 1790 he served as M.P. for Clitheroe. During the American War of Independence he raised his own regiment of horse called 'Lister's Light Dragoons'. In 1797 he was made Baron Ribblesdale of Gisburne Park, the seat of his family in Yorkshire for five hundred years.
