AN EARLY AND HISTORIC SILVER SNUFF BOX GIVEN BY LIEUTENANT GRANT TO GOVERNOR KING

the oval box with hinged lid engraved with intials PGK denoting Phillip Gidley King, the underside of the lift top lid bearing the inscription ' Lt. Grant to Governor King June 4 1801', hallmarks to both the case and lid.

Philip Gidley King (1758-1808) was the third Governor of New South Wales, noted for his humane administration and social and political reforms. Lieutenant James Grant(1758-1833) commanded the first ship to sail from England and pass through the newly discovered Bass Strait, in 1800.
