Catalogue Note
Peter Pan was one of Australia’s greatest thoroughbred racehorses. Bred by Pantheon out of Alwina at the Broona Stud near Sydney in 1929, he raced as a two-year old but was unplaced and it wasn’t until the following year that his successful racing career took off. Trained by Frank McGrath, Peter Pan had only raced seven times before he won the 1932 Melbourne Cup. He did not race in 1933 due to rheumatism but was back in 1934 and won nine of his thirteen starts that season including his second Melbourne Cup, a remarkable feat considering he was carrying 62kg and was running from an outside draw on a heavy track, conditions that explain his long winning odds of 14/1. His attempt at a third Melbourne Cup in 1935 ended in defeat but he was burdened with a massive 66.5kg and only the great Phar Lap had carried more weight to victory (68kg). Peter Pan retired to stud and was inducted into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame
