Catalogue Note
'In the late 1960's Ram Kumar's paintings asssumed an abstractionist character with a particular reverence for nature. Whilst on a visit to his hometown in the foothills of the Himalayas, Kumar noticed these birds that would swoop down with the utmost precision, reminding him of a missile hitting the ground, almost like a dead free fall to get to the prey. Using this imagery, Kumar did not simply replicate the visible but subjected this experience to a prismatic analysis and a conceptual reframing to create The Falling Bird. The work takes on a spatial quality, a sense of flight, movement and an arial perspective as the landscape becomes its own architecture.' (Ram Kumar: A Journey Within, Vadehra Art Gallery, 1996)
