Description

  • Mandala of Vajravarahi
  • Distemper on Cloth
  • 33 1/8 by 27 in. (83.8 by 68.6 cm.)
Depicting the female Buddha Vajravarahi at the center of a double triangle, dharmodaya, with the Amor Goddesses of Vajravarahi in each of the six angles, red Vajravarahi, blue Yamini, white Mohani, yellow Sanchalini, green Samtrasini, and grey Chandika. Animal-headed goddesses guard the gates of the mandala palace, with Buddhas and bodhisattvas above, Kurukulla and Khadgayogini below with the five Pancharakshas forming the bottom register.
Similarities are seen in two Vajravarahi mandalas with inscriptions relating the commission of the paintings to Newar patrons living in Tibet; see Huntington and Bangdel, 2003, no. 113, 114, pp.380-82. The present example has been used in Nepal, the surface revealing splashes of puja throughout.
