Description

  • Torso of a Male deity
  • Sandstone
  • height 29 in. (74 cm.)
The deity clad in a short incised sampot secured by a finely carved wide belt suspending small jeweled pendants, and a sash  terminating in double 'fish-tail' panels in front.

Catalogue Note

Stylistic features such as the raised edge of the garment's hem around the waist and the formalized treatment of the body indicate an Angkor Wat date for this torso. The detailing on the belt is somewhat unusual since elaborately ornamented belts with suspended elements are seen more often on female figures.

Compare the form and the patterning of the belt with a larger four-armed figure belonging to the same period, see Sotheby's, London, November 14, 1988, lot 49.
