Description

  • Buddha
  • Gray schist
  • height 46 1/2 in. (118.1 cm.)
The Buddha standing on a plinth inset with devotees flanking another dimunitive seated Buddha. The figure is clad in a finely pleated sanghati draped over his shoulders, the edge forming a scooped collar around his neck and one looped end held in his right hand. His missing left hand probably displayed abhaya mudra or the gesture of reassurance. His serene face bears a gentle expression and is framed by a fragmentary halo.

Catalogue Note

Compare the alert yet benign expression of the face with a seated Buddha in the collection of the Indian Museum, Calcutta, see Ingholt, 1957, pl. XV 4. The drapery with its deeply undercut folds may be compared with that of a slightly larger standing Buddha in the Peshawar Museum, see ibid. no. 206.
